PALM BEACH, Fla. -- The Jets announced the re-signing of Mark Sanchez's boyhood friend, former practice-squad WR Scotty McKnight, raising the question of whether they brought back McKnight to appease Sanchez in the aftermath of the Tim Tebow bombshell.
Not so, according to the Jets, who provided a timeline on the situation. They said a contract was sent to McKnight's California-based agent March 20, was signed March 23 and received March 26.
The Jets' interest in Tebow was first reported March 19, and the trade with the Broncos was finalized March 21.
McKnight was a seventh-round pick last year, failed to make the team and landed on the practice squad. He was placed on practice-squad injured reserve Nov. 1 after suffering a severe knee injury in practice. It seems a bit odd they'd re-sign a player only five months after reconstructive knee surgery; drawn your own conclusion.
McKnight will have to choose a new number because he wears No. 15 and that belongs to their new backup QB.
