Rex Report: Let Bart be Bart

CORTLAND, N.Y. -- With the defense dominating for the first part of practice, Jets linebacker Bart Scott can be loud. On Friday, he was picking on players and volunteering to suit up for offensive coordinator Tony Sparano if he needs someone who can play.

So has Jets coach Rex Ryan ever asked Scott to tone down the comments?

ScottScott"No way," Ryan said. "That's part of that energy on the field. ... When you talk like that, it puts pressure on you to play well. You can tell Bart feels great about himself and he feels great about this team. That's why he is the way he is right now. I mean he's all over everybody. Offense, defense -- especially the offense. He's on Tony all the time. He's on everybody and that's the Bart I know."

Ryan held LaRon Landry out of practice as part of the pitch count the safety is subjected to. Landry has had heel and Achilles problems, and needed gene therapy during the offseason to try to manage the issue. If he had practiced, he wouldn't have played for the Green & White game on Saturday night. So Landry opted for the scrimmage.

"We're going to protect him from himself," Ryan said.

Ryan addressed reports that former Jets safety Jim Leonhard was working out with the Bills, and whether Buffalo might be using the player Ryan brought to New York from Baltimore to better understand his defense.

"Jim does have a great grasp of what we do defensively, no question about that," Ryan said. "But I'm sure Jim is there because he's a good football player. If they have a need at safety, he's a football player first and I'm sure that's why they would bring him in there."

And finally, Ryan always seems to have a good quote on the non-existent quarterback controversy between Mark Sanchez (starter) and Tim Tebow (backup). This was in response to the idea that there was any ambiguity on that after President Barack Obama's comments.

"We have as clear-cut a starting quarterback as other teams," Ryan said. "Mark Sanchez is our starting quarterback, but we have an athlete and a special talent in Tim Tebow that allows us to do different things that maybe other teams don't have. So we're going to play Tim Tebow because it helps us, it's going to help our football team win games."
