Coples to start this week?

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- First-round pick Quinton Coples, whose playing time has decreased the past two weeks, will have an expanded role Sunday, according to Rex Ryan.

"I believe you're going to see him a lot more," said Ryan, not offering any specifics.

Look for the Jets to use more four-man lines against the power-running 49ers, meaning Coples or perhaps DT Kenrick Ellis could get a starting assignment.

After drafting Coples 16th overall, the Jets anointed him a starter, but he hasn't been starting. In fact, he has appeared in only 63 plays in three games -- 30 percent of the defensive snaps.

Coples enjoyed a promising preseason, facing mostly backups, but he has only three tackles (two for loss). But the Jets' run defense is struggling, and they may want another bigger body up front to combat the 49ers' big offensive line and frequent use of two-TE packages.

Ryan said Coples had his best practice of the season on Wednesday, adding, "I think he's ready to go."
