Jets QB coach scouts Barkley pro day

ne of the most anticipated pro days occurred Wednesday in Los Angeles, with QB Matt Barkley the featured attraction at the USC workout. The Jets dispatched quarterbacks coach David Lee to scout the event.

The Jets are performing due diligence on all the top quarterbacks. Barkley, coming off a disappointing senior year in which he injured his throwing shoulder, is generally considered the second-best quarterback in the draft, behind West Virginia's Geno Smith. It would be an absolute stunner if they select Barkley with the ninth overall pick, but he might draw consideration at No. 39.

The fallout wouldn't be pleasant if the Jets select another USC quarterback, although it's unfair to compare Barkley and Mark Sanchez simply because they share the same alma mater.

The sense around the Jets is they're not looking to draft a quarterback in the upper rounds unless there's tremendous value. If they don't pick a quarterback, they could look to add another veteran at some point before training camp, with former Card Kevin Kolb still on their radar.

Also on the pro-day circuit, Rex Ryan was at SMU, paying close attention to DE Margus Hunt, considered a second-round prospect. It's interesting that Ryan didn't attend the LSU pro day -- also Wednesday -- a usual stop for him on the scouting trail. LSU has likely first-round OLB Barkevious Mingo, plus DE Sam Montgomery, LB Kevin Minter and S Eric Reid.
