Idzik hires former Cards GM Graves

You knew there would be major changes when John Idzik arrived in January, and that's exactly how it has played out. On Monday, he announced his most important front-office hire, former Cardinals GM Rod Graves, who was named senior director of football administration.

The move makes sense on a couple of levels. Idzik is comfortable with Graves, as they worked together in Arizona from 2004-07. Back then, Graves was the boss, Idzik the underling. In fact, they go way, way back to their days as ball boys for the Eagles. Based on their backgrounds, they should complement each other well. Graves brings three decades of experience in scouting and personnel. Idzik came up on the business side, dealing with the salary cap and contract negotiations.

On the downside, Graves failed to build a consistent winner in Arizona, managing only two winning seasons in his nine years as the head of football operations. The highlight, of course, was an NFC championship in 2008. He was never able to replace QB Kurt Warner, and that proved to be his undoing.
