Future is cloudy for Holmes

CORTLAND, N.Y. -- The Jets open the season in 34 days and Santonio Holmes still isn't close to practicing. The chances of him being ready for Week 1 are fading by the day, although the organization still is clinging to faint hope.

On Monday, Rex Ryan was non-committal on Holmes' anticipated return date.

"That's something we'll just leave it up to the trainers," Ryan said. "The trainers feel good about where he's at. They haven’t given me a timetable or anything on Santonio."

Ryan wouldn't rule out Holmes for the opener, but he added, "I think we'll just let it play out." He commended Holmes on his conditioning, noting that the veteran receiver has resumed running. But Ryan wouldn't say if Holmes is running full speed. If he is, it's out of sight from the media.

Holmes suffered a severe LisFranc foot injury last September, requiring surgery and a follow-up procedure to remove surgical screws from his foot. A week ago, Holmes declined to speculate on his return date. Stephen Hill and Clyde Gates have been practicing with the first team, with Jeremy Kerley in the slot.

ODDS AND ENDS: Rookie CB Dee Milliner fell and jammed a finger during the early portion of practice. He was taped up and returned. Each day, Milliner sees more and more reps with the starters. ... LB Josh Mauga sat out with a back injury. ... WR Marcus Davis was waived with an injury settlement.
