Practice Report: Milliner limited

CORTLAND, N.Y. -- A day after Rex Ryan named him one of the two starting cornerbacks, rookie Dee Milliner spent most of Wednesday morning on the sideline with what his coach described as a tightness in his calf area.

At the last open practice before the Jets head to Detroit for their first preseason game, Kyle Wilson played the role opposite Antonio Cromartie. Milliner, who held out for the first part of camp, didn't practice with the Jets during OTAs and camps as he recovered from shoulder surgery.

Ryan said he didn't expect Milliner's calf tightness to be a big deal.

With the game coming up, the Jets altered their practice format, and neither Mark Sanchez nor Geno Smith took part in any team drills. Those duties were split by Matt Simms and Greg McElroy, who are both vying for the No. 3 spot.

Most of the team drills were second- or even third-string players. The team leaves Thursday for Detroit.

Hazelton ACL: WR Vidal Hazelton was released by the Jets after tearing his ACL in practice, per a source. Hazelton had been having a good camp and had been mentioned by Ryan as one of the players who has stood out.

Attendance report: RB Chris Ivory (hamstring) worked on the sideline. He said he expects to be back and able to do contact by the start of next week.

Notable: Smith was forced to run two laps after practice. ... Ryan ran downfield once to help with kickoff coverage. ... WR Chris Pantale had a nice catch off S Dawan Landry's helmet. McElroy made the throw.
