CORTLAND, N.Y. -- After three days away from their SUNY Cortland practice facility, the Jets return to the field Sunday at 10 a.m. This marks the start of the homestretch in Cortland.
The story Sunday will be injuries. Rookie QB Geno Smith injured his ankle Friday night in the first preseason game, but it's only a mild sprain, according to a source. He's not expected to miss significant time. We'll see if he's on the field to continue his competition with Mark Sanchez. This is a critical week for Smith, who could get the starting nod against the Jaguars if he's healthy.
The injury spotlight also will shine on two running backs -- Chris Ivory (hamstring) and Joe McKnight (head), both of whom could return to practice. That would be huge help to the backfield, which lost backup John Griffin to a season-ending leg injury.
