FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- It wasn't a "brutal" practice, to quote Rex Ryan, but it also wasn't a crisp practice for rookie QB Geno Smith. He threw an interception, nearly was picked off for a second time, and now the important story around the Jets is Smith's ability to rebound from a sprained ankle.
The Jets are back on the practice field Tuesday, starting at 12:30 p.m. The spotlight will be on Smith's ankle and whether he's making progress as Ryan mulls this week's quarterback decision. Meanwhile, WR Stephen Hill needs a bounce-back day after dropping two passes Monday, both on well-thrown long balls by Smith. Hill was arguably the most improved player on the team in Cortland, but he took a step backward on Monday.
ICYMI: Which quarterback will start Saturday against the Giants? Rex Ryan isn't saying -- yet. ... Mark Sanchez called this "definitely" the best camp of his career. Do the preseason numbers back it up? ... In a mild surprise, Garrett McIntyre -- not Antwan Barnes -- was named to replace Quinton Coples as an outside linebacker in the base defense. ... Santonio Holmes -- remember him? -- could be close to returning to the practice field, according to GM John Idzik. Of course, with the mercurial Holmes, you never know.
