LG job up for grabs?

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Reports of Vladimir Ducasse starting at left guard for the New York Jets may have been a bit premature.

Third-round pick Brian Winters started at left guard in the Jets' win over the Eagles on Thursday night, their fourth and final preseason game.

Ducasse started at right guard.

After the game, Rex Ryan mentioned that Winters and Ducasse were in an open competition for the left guard position. Winters had missed time in camp with an ankle injury but played well against Philly.

"There's a great battle between Vlad and Brian Winters for that starting guard spot. We'll see how that goes, but man, guys were really playing," Ryan said.

Ducasse started at left guard against the Giants last week, leading many to believe that he'd start there in Week 1 against Tampa.

Stephen Peterman had started at left guard for most of training camp but was moved to backup center when Ducasse emerged. Peterman was cut earlier this week.

Safety valve: It looks like Ryan and his staff have a tough call to make at safety with the final cuts coming Saturday evening.

Both Antonio Allen and Jaiquawn Jarrett have made strong cases for a starting job in the defensive backfield.

Jarrett was active on Thursday against Philadelphia, finishing with one pass defense and six tackles (three solo). If last impressions carry any weight, though, Allen made a strong one, picking off Matt Barkley's pass and returning it 20 yards for a touchdown late in the fourth quarter.

"I think maybe it's a little too close to call," Ryan said of the battle at safety. "We'll see. Certainly, we'll evaluate it all on tape. We know we have a couple of good football players here."

Ryan added that playing time at the position may depend on the opponent.

Cool running: Running Back Kahlil Bell had a strong showing against Philly with 80 yards on 21 carries and two touchdowns. Wideouts Michael Campbell (five catches, 90 yards) and Ryan Spadola (six catches, 47 yards) also impressed Ryan.

"Both those guys are pushing and competing," Ryan said. "Spadola has had some big moments throughout training camp and … Campbell has come on, he's a tremendous blocker as well."
