The strangest quote of the day came from Rex Ryan. The subject was Nick Folk, who delivered twice in crunch time Sunday -- a 36-yard field goal at the end of regulation and a 30-yard game winner only 2:18 into overtime to beat the Detroit Lions, 23-20.
"How many guys in this room could've made that kick?" Ryan asked at his post-game news conference.
Uh, let's see. Considering the room was filled with media types and not one professional kicker, probably no one. But, in a strange way, the Jets' coach made his point. Folk is on a fantastic roll, not bad for someone who was on the NFL scrap heap at the end of last season.
"That's what makes him special," said Ryan, alluding to Folk's ability to perform in the clutch.
Folk has made 16 of 19 field-goal attempts, impressing with quantity (five FGs in a win over the Minnesota Vikings) and quality. Sunday was the first time he was placed in a late-game, do-or-die situation, and he responded to the pressure. He shrugged off his heroics, saying, "I'm just trying to help this team win. That's the biggest thing."
