INDIANAPOLIS -- Former New York Jets coach Eric Mangini is back in the coaching ranks.
Mangini, who spent last season as an offensive consultant for the San Francisco 49ers, will coach their tight ends in 2014, the team announced Thursday at the NFL scouting combine.
Only a few years ago, Mangini was deemed one of the top young coaches in the NFL. He did a terrific job with the Jets in 2006 (remember his "Man-genius" cameo on "The Sopranos" series?), but it fell apart in 2007 and 2008 and he was fired by owner Woody Johnson. Mangini ended up behind the camera, of all places, working as an ESPN studio analyst, but it's obvious he still has the coaching bug.
Some might say he's re-starting at the bottom, and maybe he is, but he's only 43 and still has a passion for the job. There's nothing wrong with that.
