FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- The NFL served up an ideal Week 1 opponent for the New York Jets. Not only do they get the Oakland Raiders at home (the Raiders have lost 13 straight in the Eastern time zone), but the Jets will face a rookie quarterback, Derek Carr. This isn't to suggest it'll be a vacation for the injury-ravaged secondary, but it's a lot better than having to open against Aaron Rodgers. That'll be next week's problem.
This will be an old-school football game, decided in the trenches. I give the edge to the Jets on both sides of the ball, mostly because their lines are healthier and have more continuity than those of the Raiders. Continuity is important, especially this early in the season. The Jets should be fine, as long as Geno Smith doesn't conjure up bad memories from his rookie season.
My prediction: Jets 24, Raiders 14.
