It was only a formality. Longtime OLB Bryan Thomas, lost for the season last Sunday night when he tore an Achilles' tendon, was placed on injured reserve Saturday.
To fill his spot on the 53-man roster, the Jets signed rookie OLB Eddie Jones from the practice squad. There was speculation that DL Jarron Gilbert would get the call -- he had been working as a tight end in practice -- but they decided to replace Thomas with a player at the same position. Presumably, Jones wll be active for Sunday's game against the Patriots.
Part of the reason is because OLB Garrett McIntyre, a contributor on special teams, is out with a concussion. That left the Jets with only three healthy OLBS -- Calvin Pace, Jamaal Westerman and recently-signed Aaron Maybin. LB Josh Mauga also could get some work at OLB in certain packages.
Jones is an undrafted free agent from Texas. He was on the Jets' training-camp roster, but was waived and later resurfaced on the practice squad.
