Mike Woodson has added his longtime mentor Bill Smith to his staff to serve as a consultant.
Smith coached Woodson at Broad Ripple High School in Indianapolis.
He and Woodson have remained close.
Smith spent time with Woodson in Atlanta when he was coaching the Hawks.
"He's kind of my confidant," Woodson said on Friday. "He's been with me for years.... He'll sit in with me and share ideas and be my ears and eyes.
Smith is very fond of Woodson, both as a person and a coach.
"His character and his work ethic and his effort were things that really stood out to me," Smith said by phone Thursday. "He was a player that knew what to do and how to do it. He did things right."
