The Knicks set an NBA record for 3-point attempts last season with 2,371. They also set an NBA mark for makes with 891.
Mike Woodson says he's going to take a similar approach this season when it comes to shooting 3s.
In other words, most Knicks will have the green light from behind the arc.
If the Knicks shoot 3s at the rate that they established last season, will that help them advance further in the playoffs?
Recent historical results are mixed.
Last season, none of the teams in the top five in 3-point attempts per game reached the conference finals.
But No. 6 and 7 on that list -- Miami and San Antonio -- reached the NBA Finals.
None of the four conference finalists in 2012 were in the top 10 in 3-point attempts per game; one conference finalist finished in the top 10 in 3-point attempts per game in 2011; in 2010, three of the four conference finalists were in the top 10 and two of the four conference finalists in 2009 finished in the top 10.
So, in total, eight of the last 20 conference finalists have finished in the top 10 in 3-point attempts per game in the regular season.
Three of those eight were in the top 5 in 3-point attempts per game.
Only one of those teams in the Top 5 -- the 2011 Dallas Mavericks -- won the NBA title.
Taking things a step further, none last five NBA champions finished in the Top 3 in 3-point attempts per game.
All of which brings us to our question: do you think it's a good idea for the Knicks shoot as many 3s this year as they did last season? In other words, to three, or not to three?
UP NOW: We take a look at the factors at play (good and bad) if the Knicks decide to a de-emphasize their two-point guard lineup.
Amar'e Stoudemire will not play in the Knicks' first three preseason games, which is no surprise. Woodson also said that there's no guarantee that free agent signee Jeremy Tyler makes the team (third note in the blog).
Also, here is what the Knicks have to say about their approach to the 3-point shot this season.
WHAT'S NEXT: The Knicks will have an early practice Tuesday before heading to Providence to get ready for their preseason opener against Boston on Wednesday.
QUESTION: Do you think the Knicks should shoot as many 3s this year as they did last season? Or is that not conducive to winning a title?
