DALLAS -- The Dallas Mavericks scored 70 points in the first half alone Friday against the Los Angeles Clippers. Two days later, the New York Knicks held the Mavericks to 80 points in the full 48 minutes.
After the game, unsolicited, Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle went to bat for Knicks coach Mike Woodson.
“If I could make one statement about Mike Woodson,” Carlisle said, “I marvel at the job he’s doing with this team right now, given the circumstances, given all of the ridiculous rumors about his job security and all of the nonsense being stirred up in that media cesspool in New York City.
“This is a man who is one of the top coaches in the league and a man of great integrity and substance. He proved that tonight. They easily could have swept this road trip and this is supposedly a team that is dysfunctional. He has a great touch with that team and I just have a lot of respect for the job he is doing.”
Carlisle is usually brief when it comes to giving praise or compliments, so his bold proclamation about Woodson should carry some weight.
When asked about Carlisle’s praise, Woodson responded with mutual respect regarding the Dallas coach.
“I have a great deal of respect for Rick,” Woodson said. “He’s a great coach. He’s done it the right way and he’s benefited from it.”
