Opening Tip: Slim shot at making playoffs?

The Knicks pulled within one game of the eighth and final playoff spot in the East with Sunday's gritty win over Golden State.

But according to one metric, you shouldn't get too excited about their playoff chances.

The Hollinger Playoff Odds on ESPN.com state that the Knicks have just a 13.6 percent chance of making the postseason.

Hollinger's NBA Playoff Odds are based on the John Hollinger Power Rankings, which measure a team's performance to date.

Based on those rankings, the computer plays out the remainder of the season 5,000 times to see the potential range of projected outcomes. The results reveal the most likely win-loss record for each team -- and what the odds are for each team to make the NBA playoffs

Hollinger's odds give the Hawks, who have lost six straight, an 81.2 percent chance of making the postseason.

The Hawks have 10 games left on the schedule. Six are against teams under .500.

Seven of the Knicks' final eight games are against teams over .500.

So the Knicks have the tougher schedule, which, if you’re a Knicks fan, makes the team’s the team's losses to Cleveland and Los Angeles last week all the more inexcusable.

If the Knicks and Hawks finish the season with identical records, the Hawks have the tiebreaker, though that could change.

Here's why:

The Hawks and Knicks split the season series, 2-2.

NBA rules stipulate that the next tiebreaker is conference record.

The Knicks are 21-24 against teams in East. The Hawks are 21-21.

The Knicks have seven games left against teams in conference and they are all over .500.

The Hawks have ten games remaining against conference foes. Just four of their Eastern Conference opponents are over .500. The Hawks play the Sixers on Monday and also have the Pistons, Celtics and Bucks left on the schedule. Those four teams enter play Monday a combined 134 games under .500.

So it would appear that the Hawks have an easier route to the playoffs. But it’s worth noting that the team has lost six straight. Maybe the powers that be are more inclined at this point to lose out and get a lottery pick in the 2014 NBA Draft?

Either way, do you agree with Hollinger's calculations? Do the Knicks have just a 13.6 percent chance of making the playoffs?

Up now: The Knicks held Golden State to just 35 percent shooting in a big road win on Sunday night.

What’s next: The Knicks conclude their five-game road trip with a game against the Jazz on Monday night.

Question: Do you think the Knicks have a 13.6 percent chance to make the postseason? Is it higher or lower than that?
