Kirk Nieuwenhuis will play for Mesa in the Arizona Fall League.
Kirk Nieuwenhuis, arguably the Mets' top upper-level outfield prospect, is headed to the Arizona Fall League as part of the Mets' contingent.
Nieuwenhuis originally appeared headed to Escogido in the Dominican Republic, but that winter-league outfield reportedly added Phillies rising star Domonic Brown.
Nieuwenhuis, 23, hit a combined .274 with 18 homers and 77 RBIs in 514 at-bats between Double-A Binghamton and Triple-A Buffalo.
The Mets' players will be assigned to Mesa along with prospects from the Phillies, Angels, Cubs and Pirates. The season opens Oct. 12.
Other prospects confirmed from the include catcher Kai Gronauer, infielder Jordany Valdespin, right-hander Josh Stinson and left-hander Robert Carson.
Nieuwenhuis was drafted by the Mets in the third round in 2008 out of Azusa Pacific University.
