NEW YORK -- New York Mets right-hander Zack Wheeler remains on track for a return to the majors on July 1, although there is less wiggle room because of a recent follow-up surgery, general manager Sandy Alderson said.
Wheeler underwent Tommy John surgery on March 24, 2015. He had an additional procedure in April to remove a stitch that failed to dissolve after the original surgery.
"He’s on target for July 1," Alderson said Tuesday. "But if we went back to the beginning of spring training, I would have said that there was a little bit of fat in that schedule. I’d say right now there’s not a lot of fat in that schedule. We haven’t moved that target date back. At the same time -- I’m not saying it’s an aggressive day -- but a lot of the cushion that we built in has disappeared.”
