Kasten watches Mets, not buying Mets

Former Atlanta Braves and Washington Nationals president Stan Kasten watched Wednesday's Grapefruit League game in Port St. Lucie, creating some speculation he might be interested in buying into the Mets.

However, Kasten insisted he had no such plans, and that he was present just to spend time with Sandy Alderson.

"I have nothing to do with a pursuit of the Mets at all," Kasten said. "I usually don't confirm or deny anything, but because it's under scrutiny, I would hate for the wrong impression to be out there. Today was all about getting to spend some time with Sandy. It was good catching up with him.

"In October I was at four different sports in four different cities in a span of two weeks. Rumors started in all four areas. It happens. And the reason I [generally] don't deny anything is because once I stop denying, well then I confirm something, and I don't want to do that either. ... But Fred and Jeff [Wilpon] are going through such an awful time, which just makes me so sad, that the last thing I want to do is bring further confusion to their lives."
