Mike Pelfrey is headed to Birmingham, Ala., where is he expected to undergo season-ending Tommy John surgery, manager Terry Collins said.

Dr. James Andrews is due to perform the procedure.
A source told ESPNNewYork.com on Tuesday that an MRI revealed a partial tear of the ulnar collateral ligament in Pelfrey’s right elbow.
“The prognosis was not very good,” Collins said.
Right-hander Chris Schwinden will enter Pelfrey’s rotation spot Friday against the Colorado Rockies in Denver.
Pelfrey's Mets career could be over. He is not due to be a free agent until after the 2013 season, but the Mets could now non-tender him in December rather than guarantee him a $5 million-plus salary next year.
