Pelf progressing, eyes late-August throwing

LOS ANGELES -- Mike Pelfrey, whose Mets career may be over, is recovering well from Tommy John surgery performed on May 1, an acquaintance told ESPNNewYork.com.

Pelfrey now is concentrating on strengthening exercises. He is expected to begin tossing a baseball in late August or early September.

It's unclear, but probably unlikely Pelfrey could be ready for the start of next season since the typical recovery time from Tommy John surgery is 12 months.

Regardless, Pelfrey is expected to become a free agent come December.

Pelfrey is arbitration eligible for a final time this winter, meaning the Mets could retain him by offering him a contract for next season. However, because Pelfrey would make a comparable amount to this season's $5.6875 million if the Mets were to tender him a contract for 2013, Pelfrey instead is expected to be cut loose at the non-tender deadline next offseason.

At that point, the Mets technically would be able to sign him for any amount, but Pelfrey also could take his services elsewhere as a free agent.
