Source: Hairston not yet placed on waivers

WASHINGTON -- There is no indication the Mets intend to trade Scott Hairston. After all, meaningful games in September remain a stated goal.

Still, the ability to trade Hairston remains.

A major league source told ESPNNewYork.com the Mets have yet to place Hairston on waivers during the post-July 31 trading period.

Assuming the Mets do place Hairston on waivers this month, he likely would be claimed, given his success against left-handed pitching and modest $1.1 million salary.

At that point, the Mets would have to attempt to work out a trade with that claiming team. If a deal could not be achieved -- or the Mets decided not to trade Hairston -- he would be pulled back from waivers. However, once pulled back, Hairston could not be traded to any team and would finish the season with the Mets.

A former MLB general manager estimated 95 percent of players across baseball are placed on waivers in August.
