Jenrry Mejia may replace Johan Santana in the Mets' rotation.Rumblings suggest Jenrry Mejia may make Johan Santana's next start, with the Mets sticking to a six-man rotation.
Mejia last pitched Friday, so proper rest would not be an issue. Santana was due to undergo an MRI on his ailing back Tuesday.
Since returning to a starting role with Triple-A Buffalo on July 30, Mejia has limited opponents to four runs (two earned) on 18 hits and six walks while striking out eight in 18 1/3 innings.
Mejia last appeared in the majors in 2010, when he made three September starts after working earlier in that season as a reliever. He underwent Tommy John surgery on May 16, 2011.
Mejia continues to project as a major league reliever, but he struggled in that role this season, posting a 5.48 ERA in 16 appearances, so Mets officials returned him to a starting role.
UPDATE: Collin McHugh will start assuming Santana is unable. Read more here.
