GM 'not terribly comfortable' with Francisco

Sandy Alderson acknowledged Thursday that he is worried about what he will get from Frank Francisco in 2013. Francisco had a subpar first season as a Met, then required surgery in December to remove a bone spur from his pitching elbow. He will earn $6.5 million this year.

"Coming out of last season, looking with what Frankie has been dealing with in the offseason as far as his elbow is concerned, I don't know that we could have a lot of confidence in where we are," Alderson said on SNY's Hot Stove Show. "I hope that Frankie is able to step up. We've taken a lot of the time to look at other possibilities and ways that we can shore this up. At this point, we have added some pitching, but more at the front end of the bullpen as opposed to the back end.

"But to answer your question -- not terribly comfortable," the GM continued, referring directly to Francisco. "But I hope that Frankie over the next few weeks weeks does something to dispel that discomfort."

Alderson predicted more additions to the bullpen.

"I think we're going to have another guy or two between now and spring training," he said. "Now whether it's a back-end guy that will really compete with Frankie, or whether Frankie is the guy going in and the competition comes from Bobby Parnell or someone else, who knows? We'll just have to see. But I do think that the bullpen is deeper both from the right side and the left side. ...

"I'm actually quite encouraged about the bullpen."
