PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- Jordany Valdespin will primarily play infield during spring training, not continue to dabble in the outfield, Terry Collins said Saturday afternoon.
New York Mets
"He played a lot of outfield in winter ball. This spring, we need to put him back in the infield a little bit," Collins said. "We know if, need be, we can play him in the outfield. We need to take a look at him in the infield right now."
As for areas of needed improvement for Valdespin, Collins said: "Obviously what we saw at the end is we've got to get him to be a little more disciplined at the plate to handle some of the offspeed stuff they started giving him a steady diet of later in the season. ... Deeper in the count you've got to start being a little more disciplined."
• The Mets' Sunday workout will be pushed back to noon with the wind chill expected to be sub-30 degrees at 9 a.m. The Mets then hold the first of their unity-building weekly bowling events that evening.
• Double-A infielder Wilfredo Tovar as well as Jenrry Mejia are the lone players due to report to camp who have yet to arrive. Tovar does not have a visa issue, assistant GM John Ricco said. Position players were not required to be at the complex Saturday.
• Johan Santana's first bullpen session since being shut down last August will occur Sunday as scheduled, pitching coach Dan Warthen said.
