Terry Collins signaled as much when he said that Murphy would play in a Grapefruit League game Thursday, assuming Murphy feels OK when he arrives at the complex. Using Murphy in a major league spring-training game would make the Mets unable to backdate his DL stint. So the decision would not be made without confidence Murphy will be ready for the April 1 opener against the San Diego Padres.
Murphy has seen minor league pitching this week. That marked his first game activity since receiving a cortisone shot on his right side Feb. 19 for a strained intercostal muscle.
"It's nice to get at-bats on the minor league side, but the game is a little quicker over here," Murphy said. "I've made it through everything healthy. I got about six at-bats yesterday. I feel good today. So it would be nice to get in a game where the pace is a little quicker. I need to get adjusted to that."
Wright, meanwhile, has expressed confidence he will be ready for Opening Day. He plans to continue action in a minor league game Thursday.
