Buck, by himself, has out-RBI'd his ex-club

MINNEAPOLIS -- The Miami Marlins, as a team, have 16 RBIs this season. John Buck alone now has 19 RBIs, after a grand slam Friday helped lift the Mets to a 16-5 rout of the Minnesota Twins at Target Field.

Buck has now homered in four straight games, one shy of matching Richard Hidalgo’s franchise record.

“What streak?” deadpanned Buck, who is hitting .351 with six homers for the season. “Just like I’ve said, I’m benefitting from last year. I tried too hard. Now I’m just going up there trying to hit the ball solid. Good things are happening.”

Asked if he ever had a power surge like this, Buck said: “Little League. … No, I’ve had a couple in Toronto, a couple in Kansas City. But not a whole lot come to mind.”

Buck launched his grand slam off Pedro Hernandez into the upper deck.

“Right now, you’re almost starting to take it for granted -- when you need a big hit, he’s going to get it. And he’s going to drive in runs when he gets his hit,” Terry Collins said. “It’s just amazing. One night after the next. While he’s hot, you ride it. That’s what we’ve got to do. Hopefully Ike [Davis] starts swinging better. And when he does, if John ever cools off, we’ll have somebody else pick it up.”
