Third base prospect Shawn Bowman, who had been designated for assignment on the eve of the season with the Mets needing to clear 40-man roster room, has been claimed off waivers by the Toronto Blue Jays, sources told ESPNNewYork.
Bowman dealt with severe back issues early in his career, but appeared to put that trouble behind him last season when he hit .294 with nine homers and 44 RBI in 347 at-bats with Double-A Binghamton.
Bowman, 25, is expected to be assigned by Toronto to Triple-A Las Vegas. He originally was selected by the Mets in the 12th round in 2002 out of British Columbia.
Right-hander Clint Everts, who had also been removed from the 40-man roster when Raul Valdes was promoted, cleared waivers and will return to Binghamton.
