MIAMI -- Matt Harvey literally had a ball at the Subway Series.
For the first time in his pro career, Harvey allowed himself to become a baseball fan and arranged through an intermediary to get an autograph.
The result: a signed baseball from Mariano Rivera, which Harvey had tucked in his locker at Marlins Park, since the Mets headed straight from the Bronx to Miami.
Harvey also got a signed Derek Jeter bat and Rivera jersey.
“I was pretty pumped up about that,” Harvey said.
NO HARM INTENDED: Collin McHugh deleted a tweet about the Mets sweeping the Yankees after it got too much attention and debate.
McHugh (@Collin_McHugh) had tweeted: “You can call us the NYC Sanitation Dept. because we just SWEPT the yankees from Queens to the Bronx.”
McHugh explained Friday: “I don’t want any negative publicity or anything like that. Obviously, when you tweet something, whatever it is, you’re on the Mets, so Mets fans are going to love it and Mets fans are going to hate it. That’s kind of the way it is.
“I’m proud of the way this team is playing right now. So maybe it got ahold of me a little bit. I think the thing to focus on is we’re playing well. We’re enjoying it. We’re having fun. It feels good to win. But I took it down. It’s not worth it. I don’t want to distract from anything that these guys are doing.”
“I’m going to see how he does there, especially against right-handed pitching have him lead off,” Terry Collins said. “Hopefully he continues to do what he was doing in Vegas, and that is swing the bat good and get on base.”
NO FREE PASSES: The Mets have not walked a batter in their past three games, tying the franchise record.
“One of the reasons why we pitched as good as we did against the Yankees is because we made them swing the bat,” Collins said. “Hitting is hard. When you put guys on base in ballparks where the ball flies -- and it flies out of [Yankee Stadium] in right-center field and right field -- you’re going to get in a lot of trouble. You’re going to give up a lot of runs. The fact we didn’t walk anybody, and we made them swing the bat to beat us, we got outs.”
