PITTSBURGH -- Terry Collins said there's "no question" Eric Young Jr. has been a godsend as a leadoff hitter for the Mets.

Still, Collins said, there are areas where the switch-hitter can improve.

Young is hitting .290 with a .368 on-base percentage and has seven steals in 21 games as a Met after being acquired from the Colorado Rockies for Collin McHugh.

Friday night will mark his 22nd straight start in the leadoff spot since joining the Mets. Seventeen starts have come in left field, with the other five in center.

"There's some things we want him to do from the left side -- keep the ball out of the air a little bit," Collins said. "What you saw in San Francisco is where we want to see him, and that's really trying to go the other way, a la [Milwaukee's Norichika] Aoki and [San Francisco's Kensuke] Tanaka and those kind of guys, where they're hitting the ball the other way and getting out of the batter's box at the same time. He's going to get some infield hits."
