In differentiating when to use Hawkins and Aardsma, Collins essentially said it is based on the other teams' batters. Hawkins is more of a two-seam fastball pitcher, whereas Aardsma throws a harder four-seam fastball. So if the batter might have trouble catching up to heat, Aardsma is more appropriate.
As for why Hawkins does not like the ninth inning despite 90 career saves, Collins suggested it is a comfort thing. Hawkins is having success in the eighth inning and wants to stay there.
Collins likened it to Daniel Murphy not liking to bat third, because he is comfortable as the No. 2 hitter and does not want to feel like he is replacing David Wright. That does not mean Collins avoids using Murphy in the No. 3 hole. Murphy has been placed there for a third straight game Friday night.
