Germen nets first major league save

SAN DIEGO -- There might not be a ton of saves in Gonzalez Germen's future, assuming Bobby Parnell eventually returns from a herniated disk in his neck. But in Parnell's absence, Germen should merit more opportunities.

Germen recorded the final six outs in Thursday's 4-1 win against the San Diego Padres to notch his first major league save. He had the baseball in his locker afterward and plans to give it to his mother.

Collins said Germen will get closing opportunities, although David Aardsma now probably will handle the role Friday. That's only because Germen threw 36 pitches Thursday night and probably will not be available.

LaTroy Hawkins likely will need more time to overcome a bruised groin.

Collins needed the two innings from Germen because Scott Rice also was unavailable Thursday.

"We haven't really used him late-late," Collins said about Germen. "But we've brought him in some situations in big spots where he's thrown strikes. He doesn't get too affected by the pressure involved. ... When he came to spring training, certainly there was a lot of talk that this guy could be an end-of-the-game kind of a guy. Not necessarily a closer. But, certainly, he's got three swing-and-miss pitches. So as long as he continues to get better and he continues to throw more strikes, I think he's going to see a lot more action."
