SAN DIEGO -- Wilmer Flores, who twisted his right ankle Monday at Dodger Stadium, is nearing a return to the starting lineup for the first time since that game.
Flores' only other action since suffering the injury came as a pinch hitter Wednesday in L.A. He was immediately replaced at first base by a pinch runner.
Terry Collins will have Flores try to run the bases during batting practice Friday night, including going first to third, to test the ankle.
"I'm going to have him do some pretty serious running today," Collins said. "I think before he gets out there [in a game], we're going to have to make sure he runs the bases."
Added Collins, dryly: "If he blows out, call me. I'll be in here throwing up."
Collins also said LaTroy Hawkins, who was struck with a one-hop comebacker in the groin on Wednesday, should be available today.
