"He's the obvious choice of the guys that are here right now," Collins said before the Mets face Philadelphia. "Sandy [Alderson] and I, we've been trying to struggle with today, how we're going to handle this whole thing as opposed to who's replacing him."

Torres has bounced between the rotation and bullpen this season, as he's been the team's go-to spot starter. He had been slated to start Friday against Detroit, but the signing of Daisuke Matsuzaka kept him in the bullpen.

As a starter, Torres is 1-1 with a 6.43 ERA in three starts. He pitched quite well in his first two outings, but he gave up eight runs in three innings against Washington on July 28. Torres is 2-2 with a 3.00 ERA this season.

With Torres heading to the rotation, the Mets likely will need another bullpen arm, but the team has not yet placed Matt Harvey on the disabled list. Reliever Greg Burke, who was sent down Thursday for Matsuzaka, could be called up. The team could also look at outfielder Mike Baxter, who was demoted Friday.
