NEW YORK -- Jenrry Mejia underwent surgery Wednesday at the Hospital for Special Surgery in Manhattan to remove a bone spur from his pitching elbow.

Mejia had hoped to get through the season before undergoing the elbow cleanout procedure, but the discomfort became too great during an Aug. 17 start at San Diego and he was shut down.

Especially if Matt Harvey will miss 2014, Mejia should be a factor in competing for a rotation spot in spring training. He was 1-2 with a 2.30 ERA in five major league starts this season.

Elbow cleanouts typically are benign procedures (Frank Francisco being an exception), so Mejia should be ready in plenty of time for the opening of camp in February.
