A pair of spectators wearing “Boycott Arizona” shirts and carrying Mexican flags ran onto the field during the seventh inning of Friday’s Mets game against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Citi Field and were arrested.
Michael Syman, 26, and Christian Peruero, 22, were charged with interfering with a public sporting event and criminal trespassing, NYPD Sgt. Buthorn said.
Arizona’s new immigration law is being challenged in court. A federal judge has delayed certain provisions from going into effect.
Mets catcher Rod Barajas, whose parents were born in Mexico, has been openly critical of the law. Still, Barajas did not approve of the fans entering the playing field as a form of protest.
“I don’t condone breaking the law,” said Barajas, who is an Arizona resident. “You don’t do that. That part of it wasn’t done the right way. If you are going to do it, do it the right way. I understand that people are passionate about what is going on in Arizona, but there are other ways of doing it. That’s not the way I would like to see it done.”
