Catcher Taylor Teagarden, who recently signed a minor league deal with the Mets with a spring-training invite, can declare himself a free agent if he is not on the major league roster by June 15, Joel Sherman notes.

Because Anthony Recker is on the 40-man roster and performed capably last season, he is projected to open the season backing up Travis d'Arnaud in Queens. That leaves Teagarden likely to share catching duties with Juan Centeno at Triple-A Las Vegas to open the season.

Teagarden, 30, hit .167 with two homers and five RBIs in 60 at-bats with the Baltimore Orioles last season. He has a .206 average and 20 homers in 467 career at-bats over six seasons with the Orioles and Texas Rangers.

Teagarden's contract calls for him to make $725,000 at the major league level, with $25,000 bonuses for appearing in 60 and 80 games, according to Sherman.
