David Wright 'benched' Sunday by manager

SAN FRANCISCO -- With the Mets on a season-high-matching five-game losing streak, David Wright approached Terry Collins postgame and asked to play in Sunday's series finale against the San Francisco Giants.

The manager's response: no.

Wright, who has started every game this season, was told by Collins he will be sitting Sunday.

Eric Campbell instead is expected to start Sunday at third base.

After speaking during a pregame meeting Saturday, Wright committed a critical error in the 5-4 loss.

Collins had indicated pregame Saturday that he was inclined to have Wright rest, but added that he could be talked out of it if the captain was insistent on playing. The manager apparently reversed course after Wright's 1-for-5 performance that included a two-out throwing error in the sixth that resulted in two unearned runs.

"I just tried that," Wright said about talking his way into Sunday's lineup, "and I'm not sure if it's a day off or more. It's more so probably a benching at this point for tomorrow. I think that as much as I'd like to be in there, especially with how we've struggled lately, I think Terry is looking at it more of big picture. Hopefully we win tomorrow. Like I said, I'd love to be in there, but I lost that battle."
