NEW YORK -- Right-handed relief prospect Jeff Walters has a tear of the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow, which appears to mean Tommy John surgery is required.

Walters, 26, was diagnosed with the tear after an examination with team doctor David Altchek at the Hospital for Special Surgery in Manhattan.

Walters, a member of the 40-man roster, had been 3-3 with an 8.86 ERA in 23 relief appearances with Triple-A Las Vegas. Last season, he set the Double-A Binghamton single-season and career record with 38 saves.
