Back from back woe, Mejia records six outs

NEW YORK -- Terry Collins wanted a safety net in case Jenrry Mejia’s back acted up on Sunday. So the Mets' manager asked Mejia to protect a two-run lead in the eighth inning, while holding back Jeurys Familia for the ninth (or earlier, if Mejia had to depart with a recurrence of back stiffness).

Mejia then breezed through a six-pitch, 1-2-3 eighth.

So the staff asked him if he could handle a six-out save.

“I’m good,” Mejia said.

Mejia proceeded to toss a perfect ninth, too, for his seventh save this season -- and second of the six-out variety. The other came on May 27 against Pittsburgh.

The last Met with multiple saves of at least two innings in the same season was Pedro Feliciano in 2007.

Sunday’s 3-1 win against the Padres marked Mejia’s first game action since being pulled from Thursday’s appearance with lower-back stiffness. Mejia threw on flat ground Saturday, but had not been cleared to return to a mound until Sunday.

Before the game Sunday, Collins suggested the disabled list might be on tap for Mejia had he remained unavailable.

“I feel pretty good,” Mejia said.
