MIAMI -- Terry Collins is starting Eric Campbell in the cleanup spot for the third time this season. So what's the motivation?
Collins reasoned that Campbell would be more of an enticement for debuting Miami Marlins southpaw Andrew Heaney to pitch to No. 3 hitter David Wright than would Curtis Granderson, who instead bats fifth.
The manager further explained that Campbell is hitting .318 against left-handers this season, whereas Granderson is hitting .219. And in watching tape of Heaney's minor-league work, the staff concluded Heaney's "plus" slider would be particularly difficult for a lefty batter.
In nine Double-A appearances this season, lefty batters hit .154 against Heaney, versus .239 for righty batters. In four Triple-A starts, the differential was .256 versus .275.
