Cardinals manager Mike Matheny chose Daniel Murphy for the All-Star Game without input from the Mets, according to Terry Collins.

NEW YORK -- Terry Collins said St. Louis Cardinals manager Mike Matheny, who will skipper the National League in next Wednesday's All-Star Game, did not seek input from him or the Mets before selecting Daniel Murphy as the team's representative.

Collins added that he would have liked to have seen Jonathon Niese selected, too.

The manager said that Niese landing on the DL this weekend could not have prompted Matheny to bypass the southpaw for the All-Star Game. That's because Mets officials already knew Murphy had been selected by Matheny before the Niese DL decision was made, according to Collins.

Would Niese getting selected to the All-Star Game have changed the Mets' plans and caused the club not to put him on the DL?

"No," Collins said.

Matheny had to choose at least one Met because none was selected via fan or player voting.
