Just as training camp was about to start, tragedy struck new Nets’ free-agent acquisition Ime Udoka.
His mother passed away last Wednesday. Her funeral was this Monday. Udoka is from Los Angeles, but his family lives in Portland.
He felt like the Nets gave him a “great opportunity,” which is why he signed with New Jersey. The deal --which is unguaranteed -- was made official on Thursday.
“We haven’t really gotten into specifics,” Udoka replied when asked about his role. “But they know what I can do.”
Udoka played in San Antonio last season under coach Greg Popovich. Avery Johnson also played for Popovich. Their systems are similar. Udoka also played in Sacramento, where Mario Elie, now with the Nets, was an assistant.
The 34-year-old has played seven years in the NBA. He’s a 6-foot-5 forward who has averaged 5.2 points per game in 316 career contests. He went to Portland State.
