A stiff back kept New York Yankees starting catcher Russell Martin out of the lineup on Wednesday. Backup Francisco Cervelli will replace Martin behind the plate for the Yankees on Wednesday, catching starter A.J. Burnett.

Manager Joe Girardi is unsure when Martin will return.

“When a back locks up you really don’t know. It can take a couple days, it can take three days, I can’t really tell you. It could be tomorrow.”

Girardi said Martin’s back locked up after Tuesday night’s 6-4 loss.

Martin tried to talk Girardi into letting him play but Martin was ruled out after going through treatment earlier Wednesday.

Curiously, Girardi said Martin will serve as the Yankees' emergency catcher on Wednesday because Jorge Posada is out of the lineup tending to his son, who underwent surgery earlier Wednesday.

Martin has played in 49 of the Yankees’ 59 games. He is hitting .238 with nine homers and 27 RBI.

The Yankees have two reserves on the bench -- Chris Dickerson and Andruw Jones.
