Russell Martin, out for the second straight day with a strained back, had an MRI on the injury which revealed no disk damage.
“He’s still day to day, he is not ready to go,” Joe Girardi said. “He is slightly improved from yesterday but not enough to go. I believe he had an MRI today and it came back clean.”
Martin missed the Yankees’ 11-6 loss to Boston due to a back injury he suffered on Tuesday night.
"If I come in tomorrow and feel great, I don't see why I can't play," Martin said.
Francisco Cervelli will replace Martin as the Yankees’ starting catcher for the second straight night.
Cervelli struggled defensively on Wednesday. He committed two throwing errors in the first two innings as Boston jumped out to a 4-0 lead.
Martin is hitting .238 with nine homers and 27 RBI.
