Eric Chavez: The new Nick Johnson?

Eric Chavez, who made the team after a terrific spring training only to go on the disabled list after just 17 regular-season games, has had a setback in his rehab from a broken left foot that has sidelined him since May 6. According to Joe Girardi, Chavez felt some discomfort in his lower abdomen - near the area where a sports hernia would occur -- after a workout on Monday in Tampa and felw back to New York today to be examined by team physician Dr. Chris Ahmad. Last week, GM Brian Cashman had reported that Chavez was laid up with a back injury, a condition Girardi said had improved before this latest setback. Chavez, who had been limited by injuries to a total of 64 games over the previous three seasons, was hitting .303 for the Yankees at the time of his foot injury. There is no timetable for his return.
