WHAT IT MEANS: Saturday was all about Derek Jeter and 3,000 hits. Sunday was all about CC Sabathia.
Sabathia twirled a complete-game shutout against Tampa, striking out nine and walking just one while allowing four hits. He earned his 13th win and goes into the All-Star Break with a 24-inning scoreless streak. It was his 12th career shutout.
The Yankees scored their lone run in the seventh. Robinson Cano reached on a single, went to third on a throwing error by Rays center fielder B.J. Upton. He then scored when James Shields tried to pick him off at third but threw the ball past third baseman Sean Rodriguez.
Sabathia took care of it from there, and earned a pie in the face from A.J. Burnett.
JETER FEVER: A day after collecting his 3,000th career hit, Derek Jeter received a number of raucous ovations from the Yankee Stadium crowd. He got one before his first at-bat (a strikeout) on Sunday and a louder one after his bunt single in the third. He also got a healthy cheer from the crowd during the roll call and the pre-recorded player announcements. He finished 1-for-4.
CC YOU IN THE BAHAMAS: Sabathia was named to the AL All-Star team in place of James Shields but will be replaced by Texas' Alexi Ogando. Because he pitched on Sunday, he likely wouldn’t have pitched in Tuesday's game. He is reportedly headed to the Bahamas on a family vacation over the All-Star Break.
Reliever David Robertson was named to the AL team to replace David Price (turf toe).
NUNEZ AVOIDS INJURY: Eduardo Nunez raced down the first base line trying to beat out a bunt single and slid safely into the bag. But his right leg -- the one he tucked under his body during the slide -- hit the bag hard and he came up limping. He was tended to by the Yankee trainers and remained at first. Nunez ended the inning by getting thrown out at the plate on Mark Teixeira's sacrifice fly. Any Nunez injury would be taxing on the Yanks, who are for the moment without Alex Rodriguez. Rodriguez is getting a second opinion on a slight meniscus tear in his right knee. He may opt to undergo surgery to repair the injury.
WHAT'S NEXT: For Curtis Granderson, Russell Martin, Robinson Cano and David Robertson a trip to Phoenix for the All-Star festivities, concluding with the Midsummer Classic on Tuesday. Sabathia was named to the team, but according to reports he'll be headed to the Bahamas on a family vacation. Jeter, Mariano Rivera and Rodriguez were also supposed to attend, but backed out due to injury.
The Yankees return to play next Thursday in Toronto. After four games against the Blue Jays, the Yanks will travel to Tampa for four against the Rays.
