Memo to A.J. Burnett: You're likely going to need a perfect game going into the ninth inning of Monday game, if it's a save situation, to have any shot of pitching that inning.
Otherwise, Mariano Rivera is going to get his chance to get his 602nd save, which would give him the all-time mark.
"It depends on what the score is," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said when asked about a hypothetical situation of Burnett having a shutout going into the ninth inning and who would pitch in that scenario. "If it's a save situation, probably going to go with Mo."
A-ROD IN THE LINEUP: Alex Rodriguez is in the lineup today for the third straight day. Girardi said he talked to Rodriguez after the team got home from their road trip and Rodriguez said he was good to go.
Girardi's been pleased with what he's seen from Rodriguez recently as he has worked his way back into the lineup after missing some games with soreness in his left thumb. Rodriguez was 2-for-14 on the road trip.
"We saw the home run, we saw the line-drive single, we saw him line out to right-center yesterday, I thought it was a very good swing, I thought he just missed some balls that he popped up, I've been really encouraged by what I've seen," Girardi said.
DON'T ASK ABOUT PITCHING: Girardi was not in the mood Monday to talk about how his starters might line up for the postseason, or even for this weekend's series against Boston. He also added that he's not sure what game CC Sabathia will pitch in the doubleheader vs. the Rays Wednesday.
"Let's worry about today," Girardi said. "Today, my rotation is A.J. I don’t want to get testy, but we go through this every day."
He added about the postseason rotation: "I'm not worried about the postseason right now. Right now, I'm worried about winning games. I'm not going to worry about the rotation, I've been asked for the last probably two months about it, when you get in the playoffs. We have to get in. As far as being worried it I'm worried about this week and not what's going to happen maybe in the future."
